Abstract: . . . guidelines. Developed a Provincial Patient Register to monitor success at closing gaps in care and to provide good care reminders to British Columbians with diabetes . British Columbia Special commendation for developing Responding to Diabetes ,a provincial diabetes initiative reflecting a system-wide awareness and understanding of the current and potential impact of diabetes for British Columbians and on the health care system. Diabetes Report Card 2001 Summary In 2001, British Columbia: was developing a formal diabetes strategy and had seconded a consultant to work on the strategy; had 85 Diabetes Education Centres subject to a review process resulting in accreditation; was an active partner in the Canadian Diabetes Strategy and the National Diabetes Surveillance System; had established a good working relationship with the Canadian Diabetes Association. Areas for improvement identified in Diabetes Report Card 2001 included: lack of diabetes staff; diabetes education delegated to regional health authorities with minimal oversight from the Ministry; long waiting periods; Standards for Diabetes Education not actively promoted; few diabetes -specific programs created by the Ministry; cost of and access to diabetes drugs and supplies.
